When using web 2.0 strategies one of the most important parts of making it successful is avoiding leaving a footprint. Criminals try not to leave footprints because that allows the investigators to find out who is committing the crimes and stop them.
The same idea applies with web 2.0 marketing. One of our top goals, especially for the more aggressive marketers, is to avoid leaving a footprint so Google cannot figure out that one person is doing all of the things that normally many, many regular people would be doing.
There are many ways in which a footprint can be left, and there many things you must do to avoid leaving a footprint. Here I will discuss some of the most important things to worry about when it comes to footprints.
Adsense:
If you place Adsense on all of your sites, Google will be able to tell that you own all the sites, as you will have your Adsense publisher ID on all of the Adsense ads. This is a footprint of sorts, one that many people do not even think of.
Technically, if Google decided to, they could check the publisher ID and see that you have a huge network of sites and they will know that it was one person who made it all, and they could de-index all of the pages in one big blow.
However, apparently at this point in time Google has never done that. I personally still choose to not use Adsense, as I would rather give people affiliate links to click on so I can get $20 instead of $0.05, and that way if Google ever does decide to use Adsense to find networks of sites, I will be safe and not have to worry about it.
I personally try to leave as little a footprint as possible, but it is really up to you whether or not you want to use Adsense.
Profiles:
Obviously if you are creating hundreds of pages on only a few different sites, and you are bookmarking all your pages multiple times, you need to use different profiles. If you tried to do everything under the same profile, you would quite quickly have your accounts banned and you would lose whatever work you had previously done with that account.
So this is where the need for multiple profiles comes in. Many marketers who have been working at this for a few years have hundreds of thousands of profiles on different sites. You obviously will have to work your way up to that many profiles, but it is not necessary to have that many to start out with.
By using different profiles, you can create similar content and bookmark the same pages without raising any flags at the site or in Google. If each time you repost a spun article you post it under a different name, then the sites will not even notice, nor will they care.
Using a different profile each time keeps your profiles from getting banned. However, you cannot go and create 300 profiles all in one go, or the sites will notice and your profiles will all be deleted, which is something you definitely do not want.
The key is to slowly increase the amount of profiles you have created, using different names each time and using different proxies so that you do not have
all your accounts shown as being from a single location.
If you gradually increase the amount of profiles you have on the sites, you will be able to keep your content spread out over the profiles and you will not have to worry about leaving a footprint. Having multiple profiles is crucial to the success of marketing with web 2.0 properties.
Proxies:
Unless you are completely brand new to internet marketing, you have heard of proxies. You have most likely been told to use proxies. You may even be using them already. Unfortunately, many people do not know what they are or what the point of a proxy is and why you should use proxies to avoid leaving a footprint.
But don’t worry; Shawn is here to save the day! I will tell you what is up with proxies and how they keep you from leaving a footprint.
First of all, let me explain what a proxy is. A proxy is (INSERT DEFINITION HERE). So to be less technical, it basically tells people where you are, and tells Google where the searches are coming from.
You can use a proxy from anywhere in the world if you like, and you can trick Google into thinking that you are from a different place. If you use a German proxy and you visit Google’s homepage, you will notice that it says Google Germany. This is because Google thinks you are from Germany due to the fact that you are using a German proxy. However, generally the fastest proxies are in Canada and the United States.
The reason you are constantly told to use proxies is so that you can hide who and where you really are. If you use the same proxy to create 1500 web pages and use similar content on many of them, then Google just might get a little suspicious.
By using different proxies when you create different pages, so are telling Google that the pages are coming from all sorts of different places, so Google doesn’t mind.
So using different proxies constantly keeps you from leaving a footprint, so Google cannot track you. You have to continually use different proxies so that everything appears to be made in a different place, and therefore appears more natural and leaves no trace. Hence, we achieve second and third biggest goals of marketing: making it look natural and leaving no footprint. (The first biggest goal is to make money.)
Plan = Footprint:
Ok, so before you decide that I am a moron and you shouldn’t listen to anything else I say, let me explain this section. I am not saying that you should have no plan. If you have no plan, you are guaranteed to fail. What I mean is, if you have an exact plan and you do the exact same thing all over the place, using identical linking structures, then even if you are using different profiles and you are using proxies then you can and often will get caught by Google.
I have seen multiple people lose networks because they used the exact same linking patterns over and over again. Google notices that certain pages are always linking to other pages and then Google realizes what they have done and the pages get de-indexed.
Now it doesn’t happen all the time, but it can. Also, if Google becomes even stricter, then it may affect you even more. It is better to get into the habit now, before Google decides to be stricter. That way when Google makes changes, you are not affected.
